Toronto, Ontario Houseshow Results and Candids – 02/05/11

-Edge defeated Dolph Ziggler in a Toronto Street Fight to retain the World Title. Edge got the loudest pop of the night. Ziggler was wearing a Leafs jersey with a red X taped on the logo. Edge took it off of him and choked him with it. They fought along the boards in the crowd. Back in the ring, Ziggler brought out a kendo stick but then Edge got a hockey stick. Edge hit Ziggler in the abdomen and also crotched Ziggler with the hockey stick. He also got some waffles and slapshot them at Ziggler. Edge ended up winning with a spear.

-Edge cuts a promo. He takes the red X off the Leafs jersey and puts the jersey on. He also ate one of the waffles that was on the ring mat. He said that in a perfect world, he’d like to end his career where it started, in Toronto, so he’s hoping for WrestleMania to come to Toronto soon. He then said he’ll go for the cheap reaction and lead the crowd into a “Go Leafs Go!” chant.

PostCity Interview

The Edge: From Orangville kid to WWE champ
By Malcolm Johnston

Toronto’s testosterone levels are set to spike tomorrow when WWE Smackdown comes to town. We caught up with The Edge, the current WWE heavyweight champion, who opened up to us about making it big, the Edgucator (his signature move) and his Mount Everest aspirations.

How did a boy from Orangeville become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion?

I won a contest by the Toronto Star. You had to write an essay about why you wanted to be a wrestler, and the winner would get free training. So I thought, “OK, this is my shot.” So I wrote this essay and the manager said, “Come on down so we can take a look at you.” So I went down the next week, no insurance on my car, made it down there. They called me and said, “OK, you’re the guy, we’re going to train you for free.” Coming from a single-parent household, I would not have been able to afford the $3,000 at 17 years old to start. I would have eventually done it somehow, but that sped up the process massively.

What was your argument in your essay?

I basically said I’m willing to starve to make it. It didn’t expect it to be all limousines and things like that. I assumed it was going to be pretty lean for a long time, and maybe for the entire career. But I just wanted to do it.

And was it pretty lean?

It was pretty lean for the first five years or so. A good payday was $75 a night, but you’d have to usually drive 20 hours to get to it, so you’d spend more than that in gas. I remember doing shows in little pubs and taverns in Toronto where I’d pay for my wrestling licence, which was $75, and then get paid $40. You did it to cut your teeth and get some form of experience and just get your name out there.

What was your big break? Continue reading »

In her continued quest to wrest the World Title from ex-husband Edge for boyfriend Dolph Ziggler, “acting” SmackDown GM Vickie Guerrero stacked the deck against Edge in a 3-on-2 Handicap Match. But, just like he did at Royal Rumble, The Ultimate Opportunist found a way to preserve his title; this time thanks to help from Kelly Kelly.

World Heavyweight Champion Edge & Kelly Kelly def. Dolph Ziggler, Michelle McCool & Layla in a 3-on-2 Handicap World Heavyweight Championship Match
Before the main event, Vickie declared that if Edge used the Spear, he would be stripped of the World Title. Increasing the challenge that lay ahead, if Kelly Kelly were to lose to Lay-Cool, The Rated-R Superstar would also lose his title.

In a stunning conclusion to the bout, it was Kelly Kelly who secured the victory – and Edge’s title – by dropping Layla with a spear. Then in a bitter rebuttal, Vickie fired Kelly Kelly from WWE! Next, after Edge watched his ex-wife berate Kelly Kelly and force her from the arena in tears, Vickie announced Edge would face Ziggler next week for the World Title … with Vickie as the special guest referee. As The Ultimate Opportunist pondered his newest obstacle, Ziggler viciously attacked from behind with a Zig Zag.
